Leak Detection Process

The helium leak detection method for locating leaks in buried pipelines is very simple.

bullet

The pipeline is pressurized with a mixture of helium and compressed air.

bullet

Helium will escape through very small leaks in the pipe wall or at flanges and saturate the ground. This helium will very quickly rise to the surface even on pipes buried fifteen feet or more.

bullet

Using a field portable mass spectrometer helium leak detector the area above the pipeline is scanned for the presence of helium. Since helium is only present in atmosphere at about five parts per million even the smallest leaks are detected.

Our ASNT Certified field technicians are often called upon to locate leaks missed by less sensitive methods such as ultrasonic, radar and acoustic emission testing services. Our leak detection equipment can only detect helium and is incapable of a false positive. Ground covering or density does not affect this method at all. Our guarantee says it all. If we fail to put you over the top of your leak you do not pay for our services.

Why Use Helium?
  1. It's scarce. Around five parts per million which results in lower instrument background and therefore better test sensitivity.
  2. It's inert. The only danger when using helium is simple asphyxiation but only when used without adequate ventilation.
  3. It's inexpensive. The price has been climbing lately but it's still relatively cheap when considering alternatives.
  4. Its' light. Helium will dissipate quickly allowing fast cleanups of the mass spec and ultimately shorter test times.
